Impact Analysis: Access to vision services and eyeglasses for remote Ugandan communities

We supported Healthy Entrepreneurs and RestoringVision to collaborate on the Reading Glasses Initiative (RGI) in Uganda. The partnership is made possible through the Million Lives Collective collaboration grant funded by Bayer Foundation. With equitable access to eye screenings and low-cost near vision glasses, 94% of our beneficiaries have reported a significant improvement in their quality of life, resulting in increased confidence, greater independence and better productivity at work.

Humboldt Research Hubs: African-German science partnerships for pandemic preparedness

The experience of the past three years with COVID-19 has shown that being prepared for and able to respond quickly to pandemics can help save lives and minimize the impact of global health crises on societies and economies. Policy-makers and scientists have recognized the importance of international cross-border collaboration in pandemic management. One promising example of this type of collaboration are the new Humboldt Research Hubs, established to build scientific capacity in sub-Saharan Africa.

Professor Claudia Höbartner from the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the University of Würzburg, Germany receives this year’s Hansen Family Award for her pioneering research in biomolecular chemistry of functional nucleic acids.
